Well of all the deadlines for me to make, it’s an early one for the Bank Holiday. Possibly as I’m being spoilt in the French countryside, with warm winds, daily temperatures of 34 and plenty of opportunities to catch up with overdue breed notes. Our good friend Laurence Aries of the Solemel Kennels has been putting up with me this week. Sadly, Laurence no longer breeds Canaan Dogs but does still have a few for company, along with her other dogs. Some may remember our Sulu ‘Micha de Solemel at Nizzana’. He was a super example of the breed and was from Laurences breeding. There will be no new Solemel Canaan but her lines do carry on here and abroad, here with our youngster Bones ‘Nizzana Dammit Jim.
We can start with the latest show results from the UK. Most recently the Paignton and District Fanciers Society held their annual Champ Show at West Point Arena. Canaan Dogs were shown on the Sunday, 6th August 2023. There were five entries and all present. The Judge Mrs Chris Watson had a very gentle approach to the dogs and here are the results. Puppy Dog, 1st Nizzana Dammit Jim, owned by Mr I Kaye, Miss A Byrne and Miss A Barclay. Open Dog, 1st AmCh River Rock Unanimous Decision owned by Mrs C Miller, Mrs L Hastings-Menaker, Miss A Byrne and Miss A Barclay. 2nd Anacan We Got The Power Owned by Mrs E Minto. Veteran Dog, 1st Anacan Abu Ghosh owned by Mr M Moulding. Open Bitch 1st Anacan Sing A Little Louder. She Found her Best Dog and Best of Breed in our AmCh River Rock Unanimous Decision and Reserve Best Dog and Best Puppy was our Nizzana Dammit Jim. Best Bitch was Anacan Sing a Little Louder and Best Veteran Anacan Abu Ghosh. Considering the weather of the previous day we were very lucky on Sunday as the winds were more manageable and the rain had left. We rarely miss a group if we have been awarded a Best of Breed but sadly due to prior arrangements we did have to leave early and apologies were made all round.
The next shows on the horizon with Canaan Dog Classes are the Welsh Kennel Club at Builth Wells, Canaans on Friday 18th August. Entries are out and Judge Mr Rony Doedijns has 4 Canaans entered. The World Dog Show is also nearing, Judge Petru Muntean (RO) is judging Canaans at the Grand Prix on Wednesday 23rd with 3 males entered and on Sunday 27th Jorgen Hindse (DK) has 5 males and 2 females entered for the world show. At home on the same day, Sunday 27th August, Horley and District are holding their Premier Open Show and giving Canaan Dog classes, to be judged by Sue Bird. Darlington Champ show schedules its Canaan Dog Classes on Saturday 16th September and after a change of judge Mr Jeff Horswell will be presiding. In France, the Canaan Club de France will be holding their annual speciality, at Cerilly in France also on Saturday 16th September to be judged by Jean-Claude Klein. The South Wales Kennel Association will be holding their Champ Show and Canaan Dogs will be on Friday 13th October – Hoping Judge David Robbins isn’t superstitious – at Builth Wells.
I will publish more as soon as they are available.
If you have any information to pass on, please feel free to let me know.
I hope you have all had a lovely Bank Holiday, stay safe.
