Canaan Dog Breed Classes Judge: Ms Mel Vincent-Presland
Having won the coveted BOB twice at Crufts with a Canaan myself it was indeed an honour to be asked to judge Canaan Dogs at the Worlds ultimate dog show. As I hadn’t judged the breed since 1996 all of the exhibits were new to me, but it was interesting to note that my then BOB sired my RBD. I was pleased to have an entry of thirteen quality exhibits with no absentees. All had correct bites, were presented in clean condition and all the males were entire.
BEST OF BREED: Babrees Desert Orchid Via Caoilta (O’LOUGHLIN)
BEST PUPPY: Babrees Desert Orchid Via Caoilta (O’LOUGHLIN)
Best Dog: Babrees Desert Orchid Via Caoilta (O’LOUGHLIN)
Res Best Dog: Anacan Call Me Ishmael At Dunline (MCLEOD)
Best Bitch: Babrees The Milky Way (BRADDOCK)
Res Best Bitch: Babrees Bethea Batyam (TERRY)
Special Yearling Dog/Bitch (3)
The teenage Kanaani in this class were definitely in ‘Kevin & Perry Go Large’ mode!
1st Makiwer Black Night for Tokra (Terry, Powell, O’Loughlin)
19 mths black male displaying lovely outline and balance. Good head piece with erect ears and almond shaped eyes. Good muscular neck well laid shoulder, good tuck up, well let down hocks. Once he settled he moved out soundly on neat feet. In good coat.
2nd Babrees Crystal Hurricane (Terry)
white male rising 2, presented a very attractive outline whilst stacked and kept his topline on the move. Wedge shaped head with dark eye rims, good eye shape, erect ears, straight bone to cat like feet, well muscled thighs, again wearing a good jacket but really not showing off his assets on the day.
3rd Babrees Crystal Song (Yates)
sand/white bitch littermate to (2), feminine and typey, very alert expression, good shoulder, straight bone moved OK but flatly refused to show herself off to her best advantage.
Open Dog (5 entries)
Five cracking males all a credit to their breed.
1st Babrees Desert Orchid Via Caoilta (O’Loughlin)
9 mths old cream/white, displaying maturity which belied his age. Square outline, excellent skull shape, dark eye and pigment, erect, low set ears. Level back, good depth of chest, correctly positioned shoulder, thick thighs leading to well let down hocks, moved soundly fore and aft on catlike feet carrying his brush tail over his back. Wearing his best jacket to complete the picture A specimen from the top drawer, pleased to award him BD, BOB, BPIB, delighted that he was not over awed in the group.
2nd Anacan Call Me Ishmael At Dunline (McLeod)
sand rising 3, another quality dog, nicely balanced, good outline, super head and expression, correct ears, well arched neck leading to level topline which he retained on the move, good tuck up and quarters. Trotted out soundly, in good coat, presented and handled to perfection. Pressed very hard for top slot, just preferred tail carriage of (1) when moving. RBD.
3rd Anacan The Israelite of Dunline (McLeod)
3 yrs sand/white, one I have always loved from the ringside and he did not disappoint. Good head shape, with very confident expression, deep chest, powerful rear assembly, excellent tail carriage, strong neat feet, quality throughout skilfully handled, felt that his kennel mate had the edge on balance.
Open Bitch (5)
A couple of the Kanaani ladies in this class clearly wished they were elsewhere!
1st Babrees The Milky Way (Braddock)
cream 2yrs, a breathtakingly beautiful bitch, who exudes quality and type. Classic wedge shapedhead, with dark almond eye and rims, well set ears, feminine expression, well laid shoulder, straight bone, well sprung ribs, level topline, good muscular thighs, hocks correctly positioned, cat like feet, carries her tailcurled over her back when on the move, true movement both ways, very very close decision for BOB, preferred masculinity of dog. BB BOS.
2nd Babrees Bethea Batyam (Terry)
black/white 4 yrs needs to be closely examined to be appreciated, feminine, square outline, best of head shapes and ear sets, lovely shoulder, topline and tail carriage, excellent typical movement, correct coat finishes the canvass. RBB.
3rd Babrees Desert Song (Terry)
9 mths cream/white, a real cutie pie, has all the attributes required, just needs to mature on and blossom, not as advanced as her brother but surely will have her day. Super head and overall body shape, sound positive mover, acquitted herself well amongst the adults. BPB.
