Canaan Dog Breed Classes Judge: Miss Mary Deats
I was pleased to hear from the exhibitors after the judging, that a number of new bloodlines are in country or coming soon, to add to the gene pool for this rare breed. I do hope that with increasing bloodlines, some of the problems that appear to beset the breed can be remedied. Eye shape in this entry was not good, with far too many having quite round eyes. I would like to see more pigmentation around the eyes as well. Toplines were soft in many cases, or having rising rears from straighter rear angulation. Temperament is improving with far fewer showing the ‘I wish I weren’t here’ attitude. Almost all were able to stand and be examined without too much prompting from their handlers. Those that were in coat had for the most part excellent quality for density and texture, I think there was only one with what I would consider a coat on the soft side.

1st
Lorianna Desert Storm (Miss L Hastings)
This sand dog appeals for his masculine head with broad flat skull, ears set low, correct pigmentation around eyes, balanced fore and rear angulation good topline, well ribbed back. Excellent quality and he pushed hard for the RBD award, just preferring the RBD’s more square outline. Good rear and side gait
2nd
Sheleg Harishon At Danehaven (Miss C Powley)
Sand and white dog with much to commend but he just did not want to be here on the day and it really spoiled any opportunity to consider him. Not the quality of head of the class winner, but excellent fore and rear quarters. Very good topline, but is a shade down in pasterns and feet could be tighter to advantage. On the move had excellent action showing free and natural stride with true movement.

1st Babrees Desert Orchid Via Caoilta (Ms P O’loughlin)
Sand dog with attractive square and balanced outline, which has immediate appeal from the start. Attractive head and expression. Coat is excellent in full winter jacket with desired winter undercoat and correct topcoat texture. Excellent neck set on and correct fore and rear quarters, good bone medium build throughout. Level topline, well ribbed back and short strong loin, very good feet, pasterns could strengthen a bit more, but when moved at a correct speed had typical movement. Excellent quality. Best Dog and Best of Breed.;
2nd Anacan Masterpiece (Mesdames E M Minto & B A Gold)
Sand and white dog, who impressed for his beautiful feet, about the best in the entry I think, complementing his excellent rear quarters. Nice neck but forequarter angulation not matching the back end and this told on the move. Good topline but not as well ribbed back as the class winner.

1st Lorianna Ever Reddy (Mrs S J Coombes)
2 yr old red and white having fairly well balanced and attractive outline. Rather minimal angulation front and back and lacking forechest. Head is not as balanced as desired with muzzle needing a bit more length to balance with skull. Well pigmented around eyes. Excellent coat, good topline and very good tail set. On the move found difficulties in getting his act together, so was crabbing quite a bit.

1st Anacan Sheindela (Mrs E M Minto)
Almost 10 year old bitch with a very attractive and balanced square outline. Appealing feminine expression, very dark eyes, and balanced length of muzzle to skull. Scores in neck length and set on, fore and rear quarter angulation. Good solid topline, well ribbed back and short strong loin. Pasterns and feet could be a bit stronger. Has very good rear gait, but not as pleasing in the front.
Junior Bitch (1 Entries, 0 absent)
1st Anacan Shoshannah For Amicitia (Mrs B A & Mr P K Gold)
9 month old sand bitch of excellent quality. Very balanced head with correct skull width for age, feminine expression, minimum stop, and dark eyes. Excellent neck and front with clean well laid shoulders, matching rear angulation. Another one well ribbed back and having a level topline, when she decided to stand properly. Her movement when she decided to gait out properly, showed very good and correct free action that was true. Right now she is at the typically rangy stage that this breed goes through, but give her another 18 months and if her handler improves in her own skills, she could trouble the best. Reserve Best Bitch and Best Puppy.
Post Graduate Bitch (3 Entries, 0 absent)
A difficult class. Second and third in the class were totally out of coat. The class winner was more together on the move, had better coat condition and better overall construction.
1st Anacan Sheer Elegance (Miss C & Mrs E Powley & Minto)
Well up to size for a bitch, and is a strong bitch as well. Would like a bit more length of muzzle to balance skull, but otherwise a typical specimen, with moderate stop, broad flat skull, low set ears. Body wise, she has excellent front construction, vg bone, legs and feet. Topline could be a bit more level, as she is a tad high over the loin. This bitch came into her own, however, on the move when she showed excellent free and true movement at times. In the challenge she was more settled and this was a determining factor. Best Bitch;
2nd Anacan Kefira (Mrs E M Minto)
18 month old red and white bitch who is at an inbetween stage of development. Topline not her fortune, not the front construction of class winner. Very attractive and feminine head with dark eyes and vg pigmentation around eyes, balanced muzzle and skull lengths and sufficient width to her flat skull.
3rd Anacan Dressed for Success (Mrs E M Minto)
A nother red and white bitch which is at an in-between stage. Her pasterns and feet need to improve and front is too wide, so this was reflected in her movement. Attractive head and expression, vg eye with excellent surrounding pigmentation.
Open Bitch (16 Entries, 0 absent)
1st Talither Bat Me Babrees (Mr I & Miss A Kaye & Byrne)
Talither Bat Me Babrees, fully mature black and white bitch with square outline. There is a lot of her, so in that department is not as typical as others. Broad skull, minimum stop, low set ears, eyes could be darker; VG level topline very strong loin, vg rear and side action but not as fluent in the front, and wasting a lot of energy in her action.
2nd Anacan Simply Irresistible (Mrs E M Minto)
Another one right out of coat. Quality feminine head and expression with excellent pigmentation and dark eyes. Broad flat skull which she scored on over #3 in class. OK withers but straight short upper arm and this affected front action. I would like her a bit shorter in loin.
3rd Anacan Touch Of Class (Mr & Mrs D S Close)
Best mover in the class and in excellent coat, but, and it is a big one; her skull shape is incorrect for the breed and muzzle is too short. As a result, she does not have a typical head or expression. Topline is not good, but she is well ribbed back with good strong loin.
